The Journey of Faith: The Establishment and Growth of Gurudwara Sahib Geelong

The story of Gurudwara Sahib Geelong is a testament to the unwavering commitment, selfless service (seva), and collective faith of the local Sikh community. From its modest origins to the establishment of a permanent Gurudwara, each milestone reflects unity, dedication, and the spirit of Chardi Kala.

Key Milestones and Events (2012–2022)

13 May 2012 – First Deewan in Geelong

The Sikh community held its first-ever Deewan at the Macedonian Community Hall in Batesford, marking the beginning of formal Sikh religious gatherings in the Geelong region.

Following May 2012 – Monthly Deewans Commence at Hamlyn Heights

Encouraged by strong community response, regular monthly Deewans were initiated at the Hamlyn Heights community centre, providing a consistent platform for worship and congregation.

09 September 2012 – First Community Meeting

The Sikh Sangat held its first organised meeting to discuss the formal establishment of Gurudwara Sahib in Geelong.

17 September 2012 – First Punjabi Language Classes Commence

Punjabi classes commenced in Geelong West, strengthening cultural ties and language preservation within the community.

20 November 2012 – First-Ever Blood Donation Camp Organized

The Sikh Sangat of Geelong conducted its first blood donation drive, reinforcing the Sikh principle of Sarbat da Bhala (welfare of all). This early act of public service set the tone for the community’s ongoing commitment to social causes.

02 December 2012 – First Gurpurab Celebration

The community celebrated the birth anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji with Kirtan and Langar, symbolising the formal integration of Sikh religious life into the city of Geelong.

25 February 2017 – Participation in Pako Festa

The Sikh community participated for the first time in Pako Festa, Geelong’s premier multicultural festival, proudly showcasing Sikh identity and values.

14 May 2017 – Opening of Gurudwara Sahib in Hamlyn Heights (Rental Premises)

Gurudwara Sahib Geelong officially opened at Vines Road Community Centre, Hamlyn Heights, offering weekly services, Punjabi classes, and a spiritual home for the Sangat.

2019 – Relocation to Diversitat Northern Hub, Norlane

Upon the expiry of the lease in Hamlyn Heights, the Gurudwara transitioned to the Diversitat Northern Hub in Norlane — a larger rental facility to accommodate the growing congregation.

30 November 2019 – First Nagar Kirtan at Geelong Waterfront

To commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Guru Nanak Dev Ji, the community organised its first Nagar Kirtan, also known as Geelong’s Humanity Walk, from Cunningham Pier to Eastern Beach Reserve.

24 March 2020 – Emergency Food Relief Program During COVID-19

Sikh Sangat Geelong launched a comprehensive food relief program, delivering over 125,000 free vegetarian meals across Greater Geelong — including to Lorne and Colac — without restriction or criteria. Over 100 volunteers from diverse backgrounds contributed to this unparalleled act of community seva.

25 June 2022 – Opening of Permanent Gurudwara Sahib at Lovely Banks

After a decade of dedication, Gurudwara Sahib Geelong opened its permanent premises at 55 Lovely Banks Road, Lovely Banks VIC 3213 — a significant milestone in the community’s spiritual journey.

24 October 2022 – First Fireworks Celebration for Bandi Chhor Divas and Diwali

The community hosted its first fireworks event at the new premises to celebrate Diwali and Bandi Chhor Divas, bringing together Sikh and broader multicultural communities in celebration.

From its inception in hired halls to the establishment of a permanent and thriving Gurdwara, the Sikh community of Geelong has exemplified resilience, service, and unity. Gurudwara Sahib Geelong stands today not only as a place of worship but as a beacon of faith, education, and social welfare.
With the guiding light of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and the spirit of Chardi Kala, the journey continues — stronger than ever.
